We are pleased to announce that the datataker DT8x family of intelligent data loggers now offers full Modbus support. The latest firmware release, 8.02, incorporates several significant enhancements including a new web based programming interface and the ability of the data logger to act as a Modbus master or slave.
Modbus is a simple communications protocol which is widely used in SCADA (supervisory control and data acquisition) systems. It provides a standardized, efficient method to exchange digital states and analog values between a remote terminal unit (RTU), sensor or programmable logic controller (PLC) and a supervisory computer.
With this release, dataTaker data loggers can now request data from other Modbus server or slave devices in addition to serve data requests. The data loggers can communicate via a number of different physical media including serial (RS-232, RS-422 or RS-485) interfaces, USB or Ethernet TCP/IP. The new driver supports the 4 standard data types defined by the Modbus model; an array of single bit digital outputs, an array of single bit digital inputs, an array of 16-bit input registers, and an array of 16-bit output registers. The driver also allows for a number of data types: 16 bit integers, 32 bit integers and floating point values. Transferred data can be converted to the correct units using the built in scaling functions of the data logger.
The new Modbus master functions allow the dataTaker DT8x data loggers to serve as a central collection point to aggregate data from other Modbus sensors and devices as well as from the logger’s own analog and digital input channels. The data loggers can easily integrate into SCADA systems within the facility or distributed around the world. These capabilities further position the dataTaker DT8x Family as the most flexible and powerful data loggers available anywhere.
